Walton-Verona 2013 Football Preview
8/20/2013 - by NKS Editor
Jeff Barth enters his 5th season as the Head Coach at Walton-Verona where he led the Bearcats to a 10-3 record last year.

Key losses for Walton-Verona include Cole Mosier (OL/DL), Logan Foley (QB/DB) and Corey Bennett (RB/LB). Key returnees include Chris Latimore (RB/LB), Will Latimore (RB/DB), Mason Compton (FB/LB) and David Carr (OL/DL).

The Bearcats have the potential for another great season with several returning players on both sides of the ball. Will Latimore (JR), Mason Compton (JR), and Chris Latimore (SR) all return in the backfield and combined for 2,456 yds from scrimmage and 37 TDs last season. Justin Kline (JR) started 5 games last year at QB, providing valuable experience entering his junior season. David Carr (JR) will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line has solid experience with Benjamin Whelan (SR), Daniel Tilley (SR), and Joey Coomer (JR) all returning alongside Carr. Carr is the only returning starting defensive lineman, but Cody Catlett (JR), Brandon Wilson (JR), and Whelan gained solid experience last season. A very experienced linebacker corp of C. Latimore, M. Compton, and D Tilley (SR) will lead the defense, and the emergence of Austin Smith (JR) adds great depth to that unit. W. Latimore and Jake Higgins (SR) are both returning starters in the defensive secondary.

Walton-Verona improved their schedule, adding 5A Grant County, 4A Holmes, 1A Regional Finalist Kentucky Country Day, and perennial 2A top 10 threat Lexington Christian. The week zero opener at Bellevue (NKYSports.com Game of the Week) has developed into a solid rivalry with the teams splitting 2-2 over the last 4 years. The District should again be a solid four team race between Walton-Verona, Owen County, Carroll County, and improved Gallatin County. With heightened competition, the win-loss record may suffer a bit, but Walton-Verona should be much more prepared for playoff competition.
