Thomas More Coach Resigns to Take High School Job
1/29/2015 - by Bryan Burke
Thomas More College head football coach Jim Hilvert has resigned from the school and will take over the head-coaching vacancy at LaSalle High School in Cincinnati.
On Tuesday, LaSalle coach Nate Moore left that school to join traditional powerhouse Massillon High School in Canton, OH where hall-of-famer and Cincinnati Bengals founder Paul Brown began his football coaching career. LaSalle won a state championship last season.

Hilvert leaves the Thomas More program after becoming the winningest coach in the college's history. He coached eight seasons with the Saints and accumulated a record of 67-19 during that span. He earned the President's Athletic Conference (PAC) Coach of the Year honors and six PAC titles. He reached the Division III playoffs three times and in 2011 guided Thomas More to their highest ever ranking in school history when they received 805 votes in the American Football Coaches Association Top-25 and were ranked sixth in the nation after week four of that year.

“Coach Hilvert is the winningest coach in Thomas More College history and he will forever be a legend for Thomas More football. We appreciate all he has done to continue the tradition of Thomas More College as one of the premier programs in Division III.

Along with our Athletic Director Terry Connor, our assistant coaches and student athletes who have made this program what it is, we will continue the great legacy left by Coach Hilvert. We know that he will be a friend of the TMC program for many years to come. We wish him and his family the best of everything as he goes to an outstanding high school here in the Cincinnati region. We’ve always had an excellent relationship with LaSalle High School and we now know that it will only be made stronger,” said President David A. Armstrong, J.D.

“I want to thank Terry Connor and Sister Margaret Stallmeyer for hiring me eight years ago, as well as President Armstrong for his support the past two seasons. It has been an unbelievable journey. The success I have had at TMC is a credit to my coaching staff and players. I will always remember the great friendships I have made throughout the time I have been at TMC. GO SAINTS!" wrote Hilvert in a statement.
NKY Basketball Recap: Cov Cath Holds Off Wilmington, Brossart Rolls
1/29/2015 - by RCN Newsdesk
(1) Covington Catholic 68, Wilmington 65 (OH)

Covington Catholic got nice minutes from two of their senior role players on their way to a 68-65 win over previously unbeaten Wilmington (OH) on Monday night. Guard Cooper Theobald (pictured) and forward Andy Flood tied a team-high with 19 points on the evening, while sophomore guard Cole VonHandorf chipped in 16, and senior forward Bo Schuh finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks.

Cov Cath (17-4) withstood strong nights from the Cumberland brothers, Jarron and Jaevin, who finished with 21 and 20 points, respectively. The Colonels have now won 12 of their last 13 games and next travel to Fairdale to play in the King of the Bluegrass beginning Friday night.

1/26/2015 - by Brian Frey
The Holy Cross Indians ran the girls basketball gauntlet this week and came out unscathed.

On Thursday, the Indians upset previously undefeated Holmes and then on Saturday emerged victorious at home after a double overtime battle with Highlands, a team that has now lost just twice on the season.

The game got off to a fast start before both teams started to struggle to find the basket. The Bluebirds jetted out to a 10-0 lead and the Indians had just two points by the end of the first quarter.

By halftime, Highlands led 23-14.

In the second half, Highlands had trouble scoring. Holy Cross outscored the Bluebirds 14-2 in the third quarter, taking their first lead of the game.

The fourth quarter featured some clutch three-point shooting from both sides that put the game into overtime with a tie score of 35.
Newport Central Catholic Claims Another All A Classic Regional Title
1/26/2015 - by Bryan Burke
Newport Central Catholic remains dominant in the All “A” Classic tournament as they earned their third straight Ninth Region All “A” championship on Saturday when they smashed St. Henry, 85-44. Winners of the last two All “A” state tournaments, the Thoroughbreds have now won 22 straight All “A” games and are likely to be one of the favorites to win in Frankfort beginning Thursday.

New Cath (15-3) averaged a 51-point margin of victory in their three games in the regional tournament.

St. Henry (12-8) needed one of two things to happen: either they make nearly every shot, or catch New Cath on a bad night. Neither of those things unfolded on the way to a severe blowout for a championship game.

The NCC big men are such a difficult match-up for teams because of how skilled both senior Drew McDonald and junior Ben Weyer appear to be. Each can step outside and hit three-pointers, both are excellent passers in the post (often to one another), and both are quality rebounders because of their size. Weyer's arms are extremely long and he has terrific shot-blocking instincts, exemplified against St. Henry when he blocked three shots and changed many others in roughly a half.

The two bigs got things going right away with Weyer draining mid-range jumpers and dunks, and McDonald doing work in the paint. Senior point guard Zach Pangallo started to get into the act, knocking down threes and scoring on backdoor cuts, and the pressure was immediately on the Crusaders to respond.

1/26/2015 - by Bryan Burke
(1) Covington Catholic 54, (3) Holmes 42

Oftentimes, when two teams that are evenly matched in talent and style face one another, the team that remains most disciplined wins out. That was no different at The Bank of Kentucky Center on Friday night as top-ranked CovCath outlasted third-ranked Holmes, 54-42, in an intense and physical affair.

CovCath guard Cole VonHandorf led the game with 16 points, many of which came in crunch time. Holmes was led by senior center Rod Avery who had 15 points but was strapped with foul trouble for long stretches of the game.

Both teams came out with perhaps too much energy as each turned the ball over trying to push the pace.

Early on Rod Avery looked like he was poised for a big game for Holmes as he quickly racked up six points in the first quarter, but then he found himself in foul trouble and had to sit the remainder of the half on the bench with two fouls. It seemed like a good time for CovCath and their center Bo Schuh to take advantage of Avery's absence but then he too picked up his second foul and had to come out for the rest of the second quarter as well.

With the two opposing big men on the bench, the focus fell to the team's scoring guards James Bolden for Holmes and Cole VonHandorf for Covington Catholic. Each had dry stretches of scoring and did not shoot particularly well throughout the second quarter and the teams were forced to look elsewhere for points.
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week

Newport, St. Henry Advance in All A Classic
1/23/2015 - by Bryan Burke
St. Henry advanced in the quarterfinal round of the All-A Classic tournament over host Holy Cross, 63-56, on Wednesday night.

The Crusaders led in every quarter and were tested late in a spirited comeback attempt from the Indians, but held down the victory thanks largely in part to good free-throw shooting to close out the game.

Holy Cross is a team made up of mainly spot-up shooters that are not very tall and when they shoot the likes of 37 percent from the field and 5-21 from three-point land, it's likely to be a long night for the Indians. They played tough, tenacious defense against the Crusaders, collecting 12 steals in the process, and did not quit on the game despite trailing the majority of the time, but their shooting shortcomings plagued them.

For St. Henry, they pulled out a gritty win and are now 11-7 on the year, but it was a not a clean game for them by any stretch. Their 14 turnovers were not completely outrageous, but they had consistent problems passing the ball all night. Collectively, they at times played unselfishly to a fault and made an extra pass when none was needed. No player emerged as a regular scoring threat once St. Henry forward Paul Wallenhorst was neutralized in the second half to the tune of three points after scoring nine in the first. The Indians harassed the parameter and made St. Henry work for their open looks down low.

Wallenhorst is a disciplined player that moves well without the ball and doesn't appear to take many chances. He's big enough to pull out tough rebounds, but small enough to handle some guards and smaller forwards outside. He led the team with his 12 points.
Girls Basketball: Holy Cross Upsets Holmes, Ends Undefeated Streak
1/23/2015 - by Brian Frey
After cruising to an undefeated 18-0 record, the Holmes Bulldogs suffered its first stumble on Thursday night.

Another top girls team in the Ninth Region, the Indians of Holy Cross, came to Holmes and pulled off the upset in front of a packed house.

Holy Cross knocked Holmes out of its usual rhythm early with a solid defense that prevented good shots. Holy Cross jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and never gave up the lead.

By the third quarter, the Indians were up by 16.

The girls from Holmes rallied with strong pressure defense and aggressive offense late in the game. Turnovers allowed the Bulldogs back in the game, cutting the lead to 3 at the end of the third quarter. With just over two minutes left to play, Holmes was within 2 and had three possessions to tie the game but never got a good look at the basket.
Holmes shot just 29% from the field in the loss.
New Top 5 Boys Basketball Ranking; McDonald is MVP of Week
1/23/2015 - by Bryan Burke
The River City News/ Boys Basketball Top 5:

1. Covington Catholic (14-4):
Prior to the season, some felt there was only one elite team in the Ninth Region and that team was Newport Central Catholic, but the defending state champions proved they are not to be overlooked when they took out the Thoroughbreds at The Bank of Kentucky Center last Friday night, 58-48. Since that win, the Colonels have also collected victories against Ryle and Conner at home and have solidified their place at the top of the rankings.

2. Newport Central Catholic (13-3):
After being knocked from the top by Cov Cath, New Cath has taken their frustration out on smaller schools in the All A Classic Tournament, thrashing Villa Madonna and Heritage by nearly 60 points each. On Friday night, they are scheduled to face Beechwood in the semifinals of the All A which should prove to be a little stiffer competition for the Breds. New Cath still has two high-profile matchups left on their schedule when they play at Holmes and then host the top team in the state, Louisville Trinity. Both of those games are in February.

3. Holmes (15-4):
The Bulldogs were flying high after winning 11 games in a row, but their luck ran out when they were stifled by Mason County on Tuesday night. Holmes head coach Mike Listerman said that playing 14 games in 31 days wore on his players.
“We hit the wall last night,” he said on Wednesday afternoon. “The shots didn't go and the defense wasn't very good. You could say we were due for a downer and we just have to make sure we don't let that happen on Friday night.” Holmes plays top-ranked Cov Cath on Friday night at The Bank of Kentucky Center.

1/19/2015 - by Brian Frey
Make it 17 in row for the Holmes Bulldogs.

The girls basketball team remained undefeated, taking down Notre Dame 67-45 on Saturday afternoon. The Pandas kept it close in the first quarter but struggled to move the ball against the Holmes press and then failed to shoot well in the second half.
By halftime, the Bulldogs led 37-14.

Holmes forced 32 turnovers and had 20 steals. Junior guard Hannah Tubbs led the Bulldogs with 17 points and senior forward Alexus Mayes added 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Holmes shot 45% from the field, including 25% from behind the 3-point line.

Next up: The Bulldogs face Bishop Brossart at home on Tuesday.
At NKU, Cov Cath Beats #1 New Cath; Holmes, Scott Prevail
1/19/2015 - by Bryan Burke
Covington Catholic upsets #1 Newport Central Catholic

Not unlike last year, Covington Catholic (12-4) controlled Newport Central Catholic (11-3) on the defensive end and beat the top-ranked team in the region, 58-48, in front of a good crowd at The Bank of Kentucky Center in the nightcap of the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic.

There was a lot of speculation about the matchup between Cov Cath senior forward Bo Schuh and Newport Central Catholic forward Ben Weyer, but the fun was taken away when each player was tethered to the bench for the majority of the first half with two fouls each.

With no Schuh available, the Colonels became even smaller than usual and the lack of size allowed NewCath senior Drew McDonald enough space inside to rack up nine points and keep the Thoroughbreds in the game after falling behind 9-1 out of the gates. Head coach Ron Dawn found additional scoring from forward Erik Anderson who has continued to be an increasingly vital piece to the NewCath scheme. Anderson made all three of this shots from beyond the arc.

On the Colonels side, the team was lifted by forward Andy Flood who showed both inside and outside scoring ability racking up nine points himself in the first half and taking the heat off of Schuh and the other key players to do all the scoring.
“Andy has had his ups and downs this year, but he really played a really solid game tonight,” Colonels head coach Scott Ruthsatz said about Flood.

Flood was assisted by senior point guard Cooper Theobald who looked to run in the open court when he got the ball and use his deceptive length around the rim. Theobald had eight points by halftime and helped keep the pace of the game at a higher clip for Ruthsatz who said before the game that he would like to see his team get out and run rather than remain stagnant in a half-court game.
Big Game in Highland Heights: New Cath & Cov Cath
1/16/2015 - by Bryan Burke
On Friday night, two of the top teams in the area square off at the Bank of Kentucky Center as part of the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic, when top-ranked Newport Central Catholic takes on third-ranked Covington Catholic at 8:30 p.m.

The game is one of the higher-profile matchups of the season in Northern Kentucky and many people are excited to see who is the current best. Cov Cath head coach Scott Ruthsatz, though, is approaching the event as just another game for his team.

“For us, we're trying to continuously improve, we try to play it to the players that it's a one-game season and each game we need to make sure that we are focused,” Ruthsatz said about the showdown on Friday. “When you get into the regular season, it's somewhat of a chess match. In the end, the game itself doesn't mean much except for what the perspective public thinks of the game, but there are things we are both going to take away win or lose that we're going to ultimately work toward that Regional Championship.”

That being said, Ruthsatz does recognize the relevance of the matchup for those on the outside looking in.

“It's obviously a big game, as far as the local area is concerned. Their number one, we're number two and we've had good battles in the past with both winning and losing,” he said.

Last year CovCath beat the Thoroughbreds in the semifinals of the Ninth Regional Tournament, also played at TBOKC. The win was really the beginning of a tremendous run for the Colonels where they vanquished many of the state's top contenders on their way to the school's first state championship. In that game, the smaller Colonels stymied the big scoring forward Drew McDonald and limited the Breds to just 43 points.

Second Half Surge Propels Holy Cross over Lloyd
1/8/2015 - by Staff Report
The Holy Cross Indians (8-8) ended a four game losing streak on a cold Wednesday night, defeating Lloyd Memorial (6-10) at home 81-57.

Down 33-32 at the half, the Indians erupted for 31 points in the third period and added 18 in the final frame to down the visiting Juggernauts. After shooting just 29% from behind the arc in the first half, the Indians hit nine of 17 three-pointers in the second half to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a 24-point win.

Lloyd Memorial began the game on an 8-0 run but the Indians answered with a 15-6 run of their own to take a 15-14 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, the game was tied at 19 before Lloyd Memorial scored six unanswered points to grab a 25-19 lead. The Indians closed the gap over the final two minutes of the half to come within one at the break.

Lloyd Memorial was led by forward Sterling Hamilton who hit three three-pointers and scored a total of 13 points. Hayden Molitor added nine points and five rebounds for the Juggernauts while Lashunn Townsend and Max Willett each scored 10.

After setting the pace in the first half, the Juggernauts were outscored 49-24 over the final two periods and gave up 23 points in the game off turnovers. The team was also outrebounded by the Indians 35-26 and scored just four points from the foul line.
