Highlands Holds On, Downs Covington Catholic, 37-34
11/22/2014 - by Bryan Burke
In a much better contest than the last time these two teams met in Fort Thomas, Covington Catholic fell just short in a spirited comeback attempt at Highlands in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Class 4A State Playoffs, 37-34.

The Bluebirds were in complete command of the game up 30-13, midway through the third quarter when Highlands quarterback Beau Hoge completed perhaps one of the greatest runs in anyone's recent memory.

On his own 19-yard line, Hoge took the shotgun snap and faked the handoff on the read option, confusing a good number of the Colonels in the process. He found a chunk of open space in the flat right away and got to the sideline quickly. He made it all the way to midfield, slammed on the breaks to let a defender pass him up, took two more steps, slammed on the breaks again to let another guy whiff, cut it back to the middle of the field, broke a tackle and ran it in the remaining way for an 81-yard classic. Hoge had a terrific game before the long touchdown run, keeping plays alive for positive gains with his legs, and keeping his eyes downfield for open receivers when his protection broke down. He was the best player on the field already, but he cemented it with that run.

“I was able to pull it and really when I was able to get upfield, a couple of their guys were just flying up from behind me so I took a couple of false steps and I was able to get it back across field and instincts took over from there,” Hoge said of his touchdown run.
Newport Catholic Knocks Newport Out of Playoffs
11/22/2014 - by Brian Frey
Both teams were hot coming into Friday night's match-up between these two rivals, the second time the teams have met this season.

Newport brought a five-game winning streak while Newport Central Catholic had won six of its last seven after a winless start to the season. In the regular season match-up, the Thoroughbreds held on for a close victory but on Friday night they had an easier time of things.

The Wildcats fumbled the ball five times, their first coming on the team's first drive. Then, with the score at 6-3, the Wildcats fumbled a punt and then a kickoff leading to two New Cath touchdowns. Newport would cut the lead to ten at the half.

Then to start the second half, Newport inched closer with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Dixie Shuts Out Simon Kenton, Advances to State Semifinals
11/22/2014 - by Jason Finnell
The last time the Colonels made the regional finals, it was 2004; the state semi-finals, 1982, with the likes of future Buffalo Bill Mark Pike. Head Coach Dave Brossart and his team would gladly add another chapter to the storybook of Dixie Heights football, one that has yet to be written.

“If we believe in each other, we can beat anybody,” he told his team. “You left points on the field early. You only had three, but we should’ve had 10 or 14,” Brossart said.

Despite the final score, Simon Kenton threw a wrench into Dixie’s offense early on, taking away senior quarterback Drew Moore’s ability to run. “They tested us because they were damn good. But that makes us better,” he added.

Alluding to Brossart’s point, the Colonels’ offense missed key opportunities early. After solid runs from senior running back Luke Zajac and a 35-yard scramble by Moore, Dixie’s momentum stalled deep in Simon Kenton territory.

Down to the Pioneers’ eight, Moore fumbled the snap on third down, taking a four-yard loss and falling on the ball. Dixie then called timeout. Out of the timeout, the Colonels had to immediately burn their second one due to miscommunications on the play call.
The Revenge Round: Friday Football Pairings Offer Second Helping of Big Match-Ups
11/21/2014 - by Bryan Burke
There are eight teams from Northern Kentucky still competing in their respective classes of the high school football playoffs. At least three will be knocked out Friday night as three games feature local rematches from the regular season. RCN's Bryan Burke has the preview:

Covington Catholic (8-4) at Highlands (10-2) Class 4A Quarterfinals

The last time these two teams played in Week 5, Highlands rolled to an easy victory by forcing turnovers and maintaining possession the vast majority of the game. The Colonels gave a good defensive effort despite the 42-7 score, but were simply on the field for too long.

“We've changed in a number of ways and that's one them.” CovCath head coach Dave Wirth said on Thursday about his defense “We played 82 snaps of defense against them last time. We flat out can't do that. We played some really tough, scrappy defense for about three quarters and then just died. It's hard to play when the adrenaline is flowing and emotions are running going, and when you have 80 snaps of that, the last 15 you go from 75 percent to 50 percent pretty darn fast.”

One way for the Colonels to limit the expenditure of energy on the defensive side is by putting together long sustained drives that keeps their defense rested and keeps Highlands star quarterback Beau Hoge on the sidelines.

“Against them, you want to move the chains; you just want to get first downs,” With said. “Every time you get a first down, that's three minutes their offense is going to be off the field which is a good thing. Hoge is probably the best player in the area so to keep his butt off the field is a good thing. We'll take explosive plays, we've gotten them before and we will certainly get them again tomorrow night. We've got some explosive athletes just like they do, but we have to do a better job taking care of the ball and we can't give up the big play.”
All NKU Men's & Women's Basketball Games to Be on ESPN3 Because of New HD Trailer
11/21/2014 - by NKU
The Atlantic Sun Conference office, Northern Kentucky University and ESPN have coordinated to assemble a high-definition production trailer for NKU to use on its live broadcasts.

"An HD production trailer was the next step in the evolution of Northern Kentucky's live digital coverage of its athletic events," said Director of Athletics Ken Bothof. "All home men's and women's basketball games and various other events will now be carried on ESPN3, which provides access to over 92 million homes.

For nearly the last 16 months, members of the A-Sun league office, Northern Kentucky's media services, athletic communications, and athletics business departments, and representatives from ESPN, Ross Video, Redman Trailers, and AVI Systems collaborated to create a production trailer that allows NKU to broadcast HD quality events.

"I'd like to thank everyone involved in making the production trailer a reality," continued Bothof. "Undertaking a project of this magnitude is not an easy task, but the vision and understanding of the importance of digital media by the Atlantic Sun office helped make this possible."

"Northern Kentucky was positioned very well for a production trailer thanks to the groundwork laid by Bill Farro, Doug Wells, Wes Akers, NKU's media services department and the electronic media and broadcasting program over the last several years," said Assistant Athletics Director for Communications and Media Services Bryan McEldowney. "Coupling their experience with an HD trailer and ESPN graphics will position NKU's broadcasts among the best in the nation."
First Win for Norse as NKU Rolls Over North Carolina A&T
11/21/2014 - by Bryan Burke
The Northern Kentucky Norse cruised to their first win of the season against North Carolina A&T, 68-55, in their home opener on Wednesday night at the Bank of Kentucky Center. It was head coach Dave Bezold’s 300th game as head coach (overall, he's 182-118).

“I honestly didn’t even know it,” he said. “It means I’m getting old, it means the beard is gray now, but it feels great in the fact that you’re able to do it here. I grew up in Northern Kentucky. To have the opportunity to be here and follow Ken Shields and continue on and coach, it’s a great feeling and I’m very fortunate.”

The Norse came in to the game fresh off of their season-opening road trip through Big 10 country where they lost at Wisconsin and Nebraska before coming home to play the Aggies. NKU head coach Dave Bezold talked after the game how those stiffer opponents made a difference on Wednesday.

“Those games can be really defeating. You have to manage their emotions, you have to manage their confidence after games like that, but we go into them and say no matter what, we’re going to get better. “

The tone was set early as sophomore forward Cole Murray came off the bench and knocked down three quick three-pointers. Murray would set career bests on the evening with 21 points and seven three-pointers.
Routed: #1 Kentucky Crushes #5 Kansas, 72-40
11/21/2014 - by UK Athletics
Kentucky coach John Calipari made one simple adjustment to his game plan Tuesday night.
He scrapped the zone.

The Wildcats didn’t need it. Instead, a fierce man-to-man defense got No. 5 Kansas out of sync and No. 1 Kentucky ran away with its most impressive win of the season- a 72-40 victory in the State Farm Champions Classic.

“We kind of bum-rushed them a little bit and every time they looked there were more tanks coming over the hill,” Calipari said. “It wasn’t substitutes, it was reinforcements. It kind of gets to you a little bit.”

It also elicited exactly the kind of reaction Calipari wanted from his team.

After Kentucky (3-0) won its first two games by 40 and 19 points, they dominated Kansas despite having only two players reach double figures. Dakari Johnson had 11 points, Andrew Harrison had 10 and Willie Cauley-Stein finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

But they didn’t need big-time scorers Tuesday.
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
11/20/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast features a double header this playoff weekend with some great games! We will be webcasting 2 games simultaneously on Friday at 7 PM, Newport vs. NewCath and Simon Kenton vs. Dixie.

In the Class 2A game, Newport (8-4) will try and break NewCath’s dominance over them. The Wildcats defeated Walton-Verona last week in Overtime 37-36 to advance while the Breds (6-5) took care of Lloyd 39-17. NewCath won the earlier match-up this year 22-17 and has won 11 straight over Newport since 2005.

Newport vs NewCath Video Webcast Link

In the Class 6A game, Simon Kenton (11-1) faces Dixie (11-1). Dixie’s only loss of the season was in game one of the season vs CovCath. Simon Kenton’s only loss was to Dixie four weeks ago 36-10. Last week, Simon Kenton defeated Lafayette 35-21 to advance while Dixie beat Ryle 46-21.

Game of the Week Replay
Last week’s Game of the Week featured Lloyd vs NewCath. NewCath's Nate Enslen was our OMEGA Processing Player of the Game as the Breds defeated Lloyd 39-17 in the 2nd Round of the playoffs. The Senior WR had 6 catches for 117 yards and 3 TD's. Enslen also recorded 5 tackles.

NKYSports.com Replay – Lloyd vs NewCath

CovCath (8-4) at Highlands (10-2)
In Class 4A action, CovCath beat undefeated Johnson Central week 19-7 but now face a Highlands team that’s had their number since 2006. Highlands has won 12 straight against CovCath since then. The Bluebirds won earlier this year 42-7. CovCath has gotten healthier the past few weeks but is it enough to break the streak?

Frankfort (10-2) at Beechwood (10-2)
Beechwood has been rolling in the playoffs thus far. Last week the Tigers defeated Paris 51-0 and now play a Frankfort team that beat Bellevue last week 50-12. Beechwood is 5-1 against Frankfort since 2007 but lost last year’s game 35-21.

Cooper (8-4) at Anderson County (9-3)
Cooper has silently been moving along in the Class 5A playoffs with wins over Woodford County and Franklin County. They now face Anderson County who defeated South Oldham last week 42-38. This should be an interesting game to watch. The Jaguars are 1-1 against the Bearcats and lost last year to them 45-35.

Playoff Showdowns Set
11/17/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Friday night's second round of the high school football playoffs has set up some big rivalry games for next week.

Highlands will meet Covington Catholic. Newport faces Newport Central Catholic. Dixie Heights takes on Simon Kenton.

How did they get there?

The River City News's Bryan Burke, Brian Frey, and Jason Finnell hit up some of the games and have these results.

Newport 37, Walton 36 (OT)
Down by a point in overtime to Walton Verona, and with the season on the line, Newport head coach Matt Schmitz rolled the dice and went for two instead of kicking the extra point that would have extended the game.

“I put it in my guy's hands. That's a good bet, I'll take that bet any time and he did it,” Schmitz said.

His guy, senior quarterback Paul Price, took the shotgun snap and rolled into the end zone, getting the winning two-point conversion, 37-36, and giving the Wildcats another shot at their crosstown rivals, Newport Central Catholic, in the next round.

Friday Night Preview: Playoffs, Round 2
11/14/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Newport (7-4) at Walton Verona (10-1) Class 2A

For Newport to advance past Walton Verona, the Wildcats must control the line of scrimmage and not let the stable of running backs run roughshod over them. The Bearcats have put up tremendous rushing totals this season with fullback Mason Compton getting the heaviest load and racking up 1,420 yards so far in 2014. Running back Will Latimore has also carried for over 1,000 yards this year.

Newport has a stout defensive line led by Breandon Johnson and Kameron Covington that can negate the rushing prowess of Walton Verona. The Wildcats won the first match between the two schools in Week 2, 36-26, at home. A road playoff victory is a much harder game to win, though, and coach Matt Schmitz and his defense need to be the utmost prepared to beat the Bearcats again. Schmitz was pleased with his quarterback Paul Price last week, noting the senior had played perhaps his best game of the year managing the game. If Price can do the same on Friday night, the Wildcats have a chance to reach the quarterfinals.

Ashland Blazer (6-4) at Highlands (9-2) Class 4A

Highlands has yet to lose to a team in Kentucky this season, and have no intentions of starting this week. Ashland Blazer has earned a winning record on the season and beat Holmes 49-14 a week ago at home. Traveling to Ft. Thomas, though, is a different beast and the Bluebirds feature a deadly passing attack highlighted by senior quarterback Beau Hoge who has thrown for 30 touchdowns this season. His top target is wide out Alex Veneman who has piled up 1,344 receiving yards and caught 20 of those Hoge touchdowns. If Ashland Blazer will have a chance on Friday, Highlands would have to hurt itself with turnovers and penalties.
Norse Face Tough Test in Season Opener at Wisconsin, Sign New Cath Standout
11/14/2014 - by Bryan Burke
The Northen Kentucky University mens' basketball season tips off on Friday as the Norse travel to Wisconsin to take on the third-ranked Badgers at 9pm.

The Norse were picked to finish fifth in the preseason Atlantic Sun polls by both the head coaches and the members of the media. Last season NKU finished eighth, but they return all but one player from a year ago. They were just 2-12 on the road in 2013-14.

NKU must find a way to neutralize preseason AP All-American Frank Kaminsky. The seven-foot senior chose to return this season for his last year at college rather than head to the NBA.

Wisconsin will be without center Duje Dukan who is forced to sit the first two games of the season after a review of the senior's eligibility. Forward Sam Dekker is coming back from an ankle injury but says that he is good to go against the Norse, as reported by ESPN.com.

Norse Get Commitments on Early Signing Day

NKU also received signed letters of intent from three players who will join the program next year.

Newport Central Catholic standout forward Drew McDonald, who intends on playing both golf and basketball next season for NKU, should be able to help the program almost immediately.
As Reigning State Champs, Covington Catholic Heads Back to the Court
11/14/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Last season, Covington Catholic became state basketball champions because of their execution in the clutch and their intense will to win. They proved to be a special group whose dynamic formed in just the right way in order to win the KHSAA Sweet 16.
Every new season, though, presents a different dynamic. No two teams are truly ever the same. Even dynasty teams have a new chemistry about them from year to year.

“There are new personalities that take over,” said Colonels coach Scott Ruthsatz at practice on Tuesday. “You look at the personalities and you try to fit the guys into the right spots and you hope that you're doing a good job with chemistry.”

Coach Scott Ruthsatz is not stuck in the past. There are changes afoot within the gymnasium of the reigning state champs.

“We're going to be a little bit bigger,” Ruthsatz said. “We'll be able to move Bo Schuh to the three instead of the four or five like he's typically playing. Bo can shoot and moving him out to three allows him to take some of those mismatches out but it also keeps him out of foul trouble inside and that's one thing we've kind of struggled with over time. Now he can come from the weak side and use his athletic ability to get blocks and other things like that.”

Moving Bo Schuh to small forward gives Ruthsatz a lot of flexibility in terms of how to employ the 6'6'' Schuh, but it will also challenge the senior to display a wide spectrum of versatility to his game. He can shoot for his size and also has the ability to get to the rim off the dribble from the wing, but is he quick enough to guard some of the smaller players he is sure to match up with at the three position?

“I think we've worked on that, but I think his length will always negate some of that,” said Ruthsatz. “He doesn't have to pressure the ball as much because he can use his length.”
