Stoops Says Wildcats are Ready to Show Fans They Have What it Takes
8/30/2014 - by Glenn Osborne
It’s been just over a week since Kentucky head football coach Mark Stoops answered the question he’s been asked most frequently since the 2013 season ended.

Who’s your starting quarterback?

Yet when Stoops met with the media Monday in advance of the Wildcats’ season-opener against Tennessee Martin Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium, it was a bit surprising when he said he also hoped his second string quarterback got on the field for at least a series or two.

Sophomore Patrick Towles, the former Mr. Football from Ft. Thomas Highlands, is the No. 1 signal-caller and he’ll see the bulk of the action. But backup Reese Phillips could also get a few snaps, Stoops said.

“That’s the plan right now,” Stoops said. “We’ll get into that honestly as we get through this week. I think I’d love to play him. But you know and I know Patrick needs the reps. We’ve got to get out there, get better, move this program forward. We’ll see how that goes. But to answer your question, I’d be very disappointed if he didn’t play in this game.”

But no matter what happens behind center on Saturday, don’t look for Stoops and offensive coordinator Neal Brown to have a quick hook should Towles struggle a bit.
Newport Pulls Away from Walton-Verona, Wins 36-26
8/30/2014 - by Brian Frey
Newport bolted out to an early lead on the visiting Walton-Verona when Brian Burton returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After a two-point conversion, the Wildcats led 8-0.

The Bearcats answered with an interception returned to the Newport 4-yard line and put up a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Newport would put up another touchdown before the first quarter ended, leading 14-6.

Midway through the second quarter, Walton-Verona added another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14. That would be the score at halftime after the Bearcats missed a last second field goal attempt.

With 7:13 left in the third quarter, Walton took its first lead on a touchdown drive aided by a Newport penalty when the Bearcats were facing third and long. Walton was given a first down and then scored.

That lead was short-lived as Newport, facing fourth and four, went for it and scored a 30-yard-plus rushing touchdown by Paul Price. Adding another two-point conversion, Newport led 22-20 with five minutes left in the third.
Scott Wallops Holmes 34-7
8/30/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Scott scored a nice road win on Friday as they thumped Holmes, 34-7. The Eagles dominated on the ground in their season opener as the trio of Scott running backs thrashed the Bulldogs on multiple big runs.

“I think our kids got tired of hitting each other in practice. We just wanted to face some competition,” said Scott head coach Dan Woolley.

Scott running back Roberto London got the party started early for the Eagles as he scored in the first quarter on a long touchdown run that gave his team a lead they would not lose. Deondre Pleasant also had a spectacular game as he scored touchdowns on a big run and on a punt return and also intercepted a pass in the Holmes end zone.

The Bulldogs struggled to find the big play like the ones that led them to victory a week ago. Tailback Delijiah Ross-Tyus scored the only touchdown for Holmes but was largely kept in check by a fast Scott defense.

“Our defense is playing outstanding. They gave up some drives, but for the most part they played really well. That's what I am really excited about. I knew we'd have some good running backs but the way our defense as a unit is playing is what I am happiest about,” said Woolley.

Scott frustrated Holmes into a multitude of costly mistakes. In addition to the red zone interception, they continued to hurt themselves with what head coach Ben Nevels has called self-inflicted wounds. Pre-snap penalties, dropped passes and a bad snap on a punt were all examples of what went wrong for the Bulldogs. Throw in an injury to Holmes quarterback Desean Brumfield in the first half when they game was still relatively in reach and you had the perfect recipe for disaster. Brumfield returned in the second half.
Highlands 23 Campbell County 16
8/30/2014 - by Lizzie Kibler
The Highlands Bluebirds defeated the Campbell County Fighting Camels Friday night 23-16.

The first quarter opened with Highlands scoring a safety after Campbell County’s Carson Plessinger (#23) was sacked in the end zone. Highland’s Alex Venneman (#6) then scored a 40 yard TD reception with an extra point bringing the score to 9-0 Highlands.

During Highland's next drive, Venneman was forced out of bounds at the 15 yard line. Beau Hoge (#7) then ran the ball into the end zone on the next play. An extra point was scored bringing the score to 16-0 Highlands.

Hoge’s next touchdown was a 27 yard run and the extra point was good resulting in a 23-0 score at the end of the first quarter.

There was no more scoring for either team until the fourth quarter. The second and third quarter consisted of injuries, incomplete passes, and several penalties. Highlands recording 112 yards in penalties.

The fourth quarter opened with Campbell County’s Plessinger scoring a touchdown along with a 2 point conversion bringing the score to 23-8 Highlands.

After an incomplete pass by Highland's Beau Hoge, the ball was turned over to Campbell County. Plessinger threw a 46 yard touchdown pass to Matt Mayer (#42) leading to Plessinger scoring another 2 point conversion.

The game ended with Highlands winning over Campbell County 23-16.
Cooper's Defense Continues to Impress in Win Over NCC
8/29/2014 - by Spencer Holland
Defense was once again on display in Union, Kentucky as the Cooper Jaguars defeated the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds 31-0.

The defensive line, led by JR Marcus Watson, controlled the line of scrimmage and held the Thoroughbreds to only 55 total yards in the first half and only145 yards all game. Though the defense has only one returning starter, Watson, they have yet to give up a touchdown in the first two games. Coach Randy Borchers had this to say about his young defense, “We are flying to the ball right now, and really playing as a team. We stress defense all year and we feel like if we want to be good, and want to have a chance of winning the district, we’ve got to play good defense.

On the offensive side of the ball there wasn’t much going on until Cooper senior QB Billy Prickett connected with JR wideout Chad Michels on a 49 yard touchdown with 49 seconds left in the first quarter. Cooper then got good field position at NewCath’s 30 yard line after JR Cole Hicks’ interception at the 5:50 mark in the second quarter.

Cooper would execute with the first redzone opportunity for either team, at 4:13 left in the first half, with a five yard touchdown pass from Prickett to SO receiver Dante Hendrix, making the score 14-0. Cooper wasn't quite finished. After another interception by Cooper’s defense, this time by JR Justin Parks, Torrey Cordell-Armstrong would break loose for 70 of his 136 yards to the 10 yard line with only 2 seconds to spare in the first half.

Sophomore kicker Micthell Hollifield would come in to nail the 27 yard kick and end the first half 17-0 Cooper. New Cath’s offensive woes continued in the second half only producing three first downs and failing to move the ball inside the red zone the entire game. Coopers offense continued to beat down on an overmatched and tired NewCath defense to a final score of 31-0.

Play of the Game: With the score 14-0 and the NewCath offense threatening to score, Justin Parks intercepted an Anderson throw in the end zone to give Cooper the ball with 1:03 left in the first half.

Player of the Game: Cooper’s defensive line. They harassed Anderson all night long and forced two interceptions that resulted in Cooper scores.

High School Football Preview: Holmes vs. Scott
8/29/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Last week in the season opener, Holmes managed to get by Holy Cross in a hot and tiresome game, mostly by limiting the rushing attack and forcing the Indians to go to the air. The interior defensive linemen did a solid job of plugging their gaps and forcing ball-carriers to the outside on their runs. The strategy worked well, frustrating Holy Cross into incompletions and turnovers.

Scott is another team that focuses its offensive playcalling around the run. Head Coach Dan Woolley showcases a stable of high-quality running backs and intends on riding the trio to wins this season.

“We're primarily a running team. We have at least three backs that have the potential to be really, really good,” Woolley said. “We're blessed that we have three and I think they could start for a lot of teams in Northern Kentucky.”
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
8/27/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week features Walton-Verona vs. Newport. This is our first football webcast of the 2014 season and we’ll have a Game of the Week each week all throughout the playoffs. You can view our entire 2014 OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast schedule by Clicking Here.

Both Walton-Verona and Newport opened their seasons last week. The Bearcats controlled Bellevue the entire game and went on to win 40-0 over the Tigers. RB Mason Compton rushed for 77 yards and 2 TD’s while QB Justin Kline threw for 119 yards and 2 TD’s. The Wildcats played in a much more competitive game losing 32-28 to Mason County. QB Paul Price led Newport with 57 rush yards and 2 rush TD’s along with 163 pass yards and 1 pass TD.

Walton-Verona is 2-0 against Newport and won last year 48-13.

Highlands (0-0) at Campbell County (1-0)
The Brian Weinrich era begins on Friday as the Bluebirds travel to Campbell County. Expect the Bluebirds to have another strong season under the new helm. This will be Highlands’ first game of the 2014 season and they haven’t lost to a Northern Kentucky team since October 28, 2010 at Ryle 28-26.

Last week, the Camels defeated East Central 31-14. Quarterback Carson Plessinger led Campbell County with 142 rush yards and 2 rush TD’s along with 86 pass yards and 1 pass TD. Highlands defeated Campbell County last year 50-8.

NewCath (0-0) at Cooper (1-0)
NewCath travels to Cooper for their season opener, they were supposed to play at Ashland Blazer last week but heavy rain flooded the football field forcing the game to be cancelled. Cooper defeated Ryle last week in a defensive battle 12-3 and they look to make it 2 wins in a row over the Breds as they defeated NewCath last year 31-22.

Conner (0-0) at Boone County (0-1)
Conner is another team starting their season this weekend. The Cougars no longer have star QB Drew Barker, and are looking to find a new identity for their team. Boone County lost to CovCath last weekend 39-6, which only consisted of one half of play. The game was called at halftime due to heat. Boone County is 4-5 against Conner since 2005 and lost last year to the Cougars 40-7.

Dixie (0-0) at CovCath (1-0) on Saturday
Both Dixie and CovCath look to be strong contenders this year. Dixie ended last year with a record of 8-4 before losing to Simon Kenton 31-19 in the playoffs. CovCath looks to be even better than last year, and they defeated Boone County last week in one half 39-6. The Colonels were led by QB Adam Wagner who threw for 230 yards and 5 TD’s. Logan McDowell recorded 3 TD receptions.

Since 2005, CovCath is 9-1 against Dixie and they edged them last year in a close game 21-13. This game is part of the Skyline Chili Showdown and the kickoff has been moved up to 9:30 A.M.

Other games this weekend:

Lloyd at Dayton
Bracken County at Ludlow
Scott at Holmes
Simon Kenton at Holy Cross
Scott County at Ryle
Cincinnati Country Day at Pendleton County
Owen County at Grant County

Not Pretty, but Holmes Downs Holy Cross, 21-7
8/25/2014 - by Bryan Burke
The Holmes Bulldogs outlasted the visiting Holy Cross Indians, 21-7, in a long and humid contest that included a 30-minute lightning delay.

The game was anything but clean as the teams combined for six turnovers and a multitude of penalties, mostly of the pre-snap variety. The Bulldogs soldiered through the mess and broke the game open with two long touchdown runs by senior running back Delijuah Ross Tyus.

"Wasn't pretty, but I just told the kids I would rather have an ugly win than an ugly loss," said Bulldogs Head Coach Ben Nevels. "So, we'll take it. We'll watch film from it and learn from it."

Holy Cross scored its only touchdown on its opening drive and looked good doing in, thanks in large part to the accurate passing by quarterback Hamilton Scott. After that, however, Holmes adjusted by taking away shorter passes in the flats and forcing the Indians to use the middle of the field which they were not able to do well.
Dayton Holds Off Late Rally from Brossart, Wins Opener 18-13
8/25/2014 - by Brian Frey
It was a thriller in Dayton and fans got their money's worth as this was one of the few games on Friday night not delayed or canceled by lightning.

The Greendevils scored a touchdown on its opening drive with the aid of a Bishop Brossart pass interference call on fourth down, keeping the Dayton drive alive.

Brossart's first drive had a big run called back on a holding penalty, and then was ended with a Dayton interception. Brossart's drive at the end of the first half ended with a second Dayton interception.

The Greendevils led at the half 12-0.
Tradition, Hard Work at Core of Newport Central Catholic's Gridiron Success
8/22/2014 - by Bryan Burke
High atop the hill that looks out across Newport and clear into the hills of Cincinnati, Newport Central Catholic gears up for what they expect to be another winning season. The Thoroughbreds have remained one of the region's elite athletic programs over the past few decades and the success of the football team reflects that strong tradition.

Over the past six seasons, NCC has combined for a record of 51-19, including a 19-1 record in district games during that span.

“Our district games are huge with Lloyd, Holy Cross and Newport, all of which are going to be pretty good this year,” said head coach Dan Wagner.

Hard work is important, but a program doesn't win that consistently without a healthy dose of talent within its ranks. This season appears no different, as the Breds have talented players in a variety of positions, highlighted by running back, Jacob Smith. The stocky, thousand-yard rusher returns this season and is expected to have a major contribution toward Newport Catholic's offensive attack for Coach Wagner.
Newport Wildcats Hope to Build On Last Year's Late Season Momentum
8/22/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Newport High School football coach, Matt Schmitz has a lot to think about for the upcoming season. There are logistics to finalize, practices to organize and strategies to perfect. One thing Schmitz doesn't need to worry about, though, are the individuals on his practice field coming together as a team.

“We all got really close, really quickly last year due to some personal circumstances,” Coach Schmitz told The River City News.

Schmitz took over the head coaching spot at Newport in June of last year. While he was in the midst of putting his staff together, he and his father, Bill, would work with his team during summer practices. Then, after the team's first game, Schmitz' father passed away.
After Historic Season, Scott Football Hopes to Build Winning Tradition
8/22/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Scott High School is working hard to build a winning foundation to its football program. Last season, the Eagles finished with their best record ever and only their second winning season in school history. That team was made up of many seniors at key positions and adequately replacing those players remain the team's top priority.

“The biggest thing we're facing this year is the fact that we lost a lot of good seniors last year,” Scott head coach Dan Woolley said. “But we have a lot of kids that have been waiting in the wings, stepped up and had a lot of success at the junior varsity level so we're hoping that rolls over onto the varsity level”.

One of the top returning figures from the winning campaign of 2013 is two-way standout, Roberto London, who is expected to shoulder a lot of the team's ground game at running back and is also assigned the responsibility of making the defensive calls from his safety position London rushed for over 500 yards and tallied six rushing touchdowns a year ago.
Friday Night Football is Back in Northern Kentucky
8/21/2014 - by NKS Editor
Yes, it's that time of the year again . . . Friday Night Football in Northern Kentucky. And NKYSports.com will once again be covering all the action with the OMEGA Processing Game of the Week, our LIVE Friday Night Scoreboard, Twitter updates, stats and much more!

Our first OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast won't start until next weekend, which features Walton-Verona at Newport, but there's still plenty of action going on for the first week of High School football.

Here's a quick look at the match-ups this weekend:

Ryle vs Cooper
The Raiders and Jaguars are both looking to rebound from last year's disappointing season. Ryle finished the season at 2-9 while Cooper ended their year with a 3-8 record. Ryle is 5-1 against Cooper and won last year 17-10. This should be a very competitive game and also kicks off the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

Holmes vs Holy Cross
The Covington rivalry continues this Friday as Holy Cross tries to improve from their 1-10 record from last year. Holmes finished 5-6 last year with some good wins but fell to Ashland Blazer in the playoffs 49-20. The Bulldogs are 5-2 against the Indians since 2005.

Collins vs Simon Kenton
The Pioneers will be tested right away with last year's Class 4A Champion Collins High School. Collins had defeated Highlands last year 37-34 in a classic State Championship game, and will now head to Simon Kenton on Friday. Simon Kenton should be strong again this year even with losing their star Quarterback, Brenan Kuntz. They finished the season 12-1 last year being knocked out by Butler 29-14 in the Class 6A Quarterfinals. The Pioneers defeated Collins last year in the first game of the season 23-21.

Other games this weekend:
Brossart at Dayton

Ludlow at Gallatin Co
Newport at Mason Co
NewCath at Ashland Blazer
