Friday Night Preview: Bellevue-Dayton Rivalry is Kentucky's Most Played
10/24/2014 - by Bryan Burke
A preview of Friday night's high school gridiron action from RCN's Bryan Burke:

Dayton (2-6) at Bellevue (5-4) Class 1A District 3
No two teams have played each other more often than Dayton and Bellevue in the state of Kentucky. This year's Battle for the Paddle will be the 135th game between the neighboring rivals. Since 2007, the winner of the game receives a paddle with the results of the previous outcomes engraved in the wood. Bellevue has won the last six regular-season games and seven overall including postseason.

Bellevue won an important game over Ludlow last Thursday to even their district record to 1-1. If Bellevue can beat Dayton and Beechwood can beat Ludlow, Bellevue will have second place in the district. The Tigers have won four of their last five games, but were beaten badly at Beechwood in the rain two weeks ago. They edged out Ludlow, 20-14, last Friday night and need to head into postseason play with momentum on their side. Tigers quarterback Tate Grainger needs just 142 yards passing to go over 2,000 on the season. Grainger has also thrown for 22 touchdowns in 2014.

Dayton on the other hand, has had a forgettable season, sporting a 2-6 record on the year and having lost six of their last seven. The misery for the Greendevils came to a head last week at home where they lost to Beechwood. 62-0.

Beechwood (6-2) at Ludlow (5-3) Class 1A District 3
Beechwood has put itself in the drivers seat of the district after hammering both Bellevue and Dayton in consecutive weeks. The Tigers have not lost a regular-season district game in at least six seasons and have gained steam this season winning six straight games.
UK Football Has Homecoming Date with No. 1 Mississippi State
10/24/2014 - by Ashley Scoby
When the University of Kentucky scheduled its homecoming festivities for the week of the Mississippi State game, it probably didn’t expect the Bulldogs to be the No. 1 ranked team in America.

That is the case, though, and the Wildcats will face their greatest challenge of the year when Heisman favorite Dak Prescott and his red-hot Mississippi State team come to Lexington Saturday afternoon.

Prescott is fifth in the Southeastern Conference in passing yardage, while also ranking fourth in rushing.

“I think that he’s making better decisions and he’s getting rid of the ball quicker than he did last year,” said Kentucky defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot of Prescott. “He’s always been a great runner and they’ve always had a great quarterback run game plan, but now he’s added that dimension of being able to throw the ball and make great decisions as well.”

Prescott’s star power has skyrocketed in recent weeks, as he’s led the Bulldogs to three straight victories against SEC opponents (LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn). He’s averaging 246.3 yards per game through the air and 96 on the ground. His name has blown up on social media, and he’s shot himself into the national conversation for the Heisman Trophy.
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
10/24/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast features Conner (3-5) vs. Scott (5-2).

Even though Conner only has 3 wins they have 2 District wins and are currently 3rd in the District. Scott only has one District win and this would be a huge game to win. Conner has won 3 of their last 4 games, they defeated Grant County last week 32-20. Scott has cooled off somewhat after winning their first 4 games. They are 1-2 the past 3 District games, they lost last week to South Oldham 17-6.

Since 2005, the Cougars are 7-0 against the Eagles.

Game of the Week Replay
Last week’s Game of the Week featured Simon Kenton vs Dixie. Dixie's Drew Moore was our OMEGA Processing Player of the Game as the Colonels defeated Simon Kenton 36-10. The Senior QB rushed for 169 yards and 3 TD's. Replay – Simon Kenton vs Dixie

NewCath 50 Holy Cross 21
Thursday night NewCath defeated Holy Cross 50-21 behind the rushing of Jacob Smith who had over 200 yards rushing and 5 rush TD’s. The Breds also forced 6 turnovers.

Elder (5-3) at Highlands (7-1)
This will be a great game to watch as Elder visits Ft. Thomas. This has always been a hard fought game. Since 2006, Elder is 3-1 against the Bluebirds but they’ve all been close. Last year Elder won 30-27 at Elder.

Dixie (7-1) at Ryle (4-5)
Another great game this week is Dixie at Ryle. Both these teams are hot. Dixie has won 7 in a row and is coming off a huge 36-10 win Simon Kenton. Ryle lost to Simon Kenton earlier this season but since then has won 3 straight including wins over CovCath and Campbell County.

A win from Ryle would force a 3-way tie with Dixie and Simon Kenton for this Class 6A NKY District.

Ryle is 6-4 against Dixie since 2005. Dixie won last year 42-10.

Lloyd (7-1) at Newport (4-4)
The winner of this District game will solidify the #2 seed in their District behind NewCath. Lloyd is coming off a 42-6 win over Pendleton County while Newport defeated Holy Cross last week 51-6. Newport is 4-5 against Lloyd since 2005.

Other games this weekend:
Dayton at Bellevue
Boone County at Campbell County
Beechwood at Ludlow
CovCath at Holmes
Bullitt Central at Simon Kenton
Pendleton County at Brossart
Grant County at Cooper

Notre Dame finished off Beechwood Wednesday night to claim the 35th District volleyball title.

The Pandas beat Holmes and the Tigers downed Holy Cross to reach the district final where Notre Dame won all three sets, 25-14, 25-8, and 25-17.

Around Northern Kentucky, Scott faces Campbell County on Thursday evening for the 37th District title while Ryle and Cooper face off in the 33rd District championship.

561 Yards of Offense Propels Thomas More Past St. Vincent, 49-7
10/20/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Running back Domonique Hayden is a huge part of the Thomas More offense, so without him in the lineup today, some may have been concerned that the Saints would have trouble moving the ball and scoring points. Thomas More defeated St. Vincent, 49-7, and put up 561 yards of total offense.

Freshman backup running back Chris Tarrant is built in similar fashion to Hayden. Both men are listed at 5'8'', both have extremely wide legs and both can move the pile.

Perhaps Hayden is a bit more explosive in the open field, and could be a mite faster, but Tarrant appears to provide a bright future for head coach Jim Hilvert in the backfield.

“They're very, very similar. I've been really blessed to have a stable of good running backs. Our offensive line did a great job too,” said Hilvert.

Tarrant carried the rock 24 times on the afternoon for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
Yet as impressive as the Saints offense played Saturday, their defense also turned in a sterling performance. Defensive end Rodderick Darden stood out as he and his line mates were able to beat the St. Vincent offensive tackles on a regular basis, which allowed them to either crash down on hand offs, or force the Mustang quarterback Andy Borgan out of the pocket. The Saints defense essentially pitched a shutout since the only St. Vincent score came from a punt return.
Dixie Beats Simon Kenton, 36-10
10/20/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Dixie manhandled Simon Kenton in a statement game, 36-10, on Dixie's homecoming night, which both ruins the Pioneers' perfect season and jettisons the Colonels to the top of their district standings.

“I don't know who the better team is, but tonight we played better than them,” Dixie head coach Dave Brossart said.

The game featured a bevy of talent on both sides, but despite playing less players, it was Dixie that maximized their offensive weaponry while limiting the dynamic play-makers of Simon Kenton on the other side. Colonels quarterback Drew Moore was terrific as he roasted the Pioneer defense on the read-option play time and again. Moore scored three first half touchdowns on quarterback keepers from the read-option play in a sequence that set an early tone for a Dixie blowout.

Simon Kenton got the ball first and quarterback Cam Racke was immediately sacked by Owen Sammons on the first play. A short while later, the Pioneers went for it on fourth down from their own 38 yard line when the snap to Racke went over his head and resulted in a 23-yard loss on the play. It appeared that there was some early movement on the line which may have thrown off the concentration of the center, but nonetheless, it gave the ball to the Colonels in the red zone and Moore promptly waltzed into the end zone of his first score of the game.

After Moore scored again on the same play, only to the left this time, the Colonels missed their second two-point conversion in a row, making the score 12-0 in the first quarter. Later in the half, Simon Kenton got good field position after a bad Dixie punt that resulted in three points for the Pioneers, making the score 12-3.
Newport Rolls Over Holy Cross, 51-6
10/20/2014 - by Jason Finnell
The second play of the game provided a harbinger of things to come for Newport on a night it dominated its opponent, Holy Cross. But sometimes, it pays to be more lucky than good.

Well inside their own territory, senior quarterback Paul Price retrieved an errant shotgun snap that sailed over his head. Recovered, Price found a wide open Rico Hollis 40 yards down the sideline sneaking past the Holy Cross defense which thought it had the Wildcats’ quarterback for a significant loss. Only 25 seconds in, Newport jumped out to an 8-0 lead.

On the Indians’ ensuing drive, junior quarterback Hamilton Scott led his team down the field to the Newport 25, where their momentum ended, ultimately missing a 40-yard field goal wide right.

With good field position, Newport took advantage. On a sweep down the right sideline, junior Tyree Bolden gave the Wildcats another big play. Adding salt to the Indians’ wound, Bolden was taken down by his facemask, tacking on additional yardage and giving Newport the ball near the Indians’ 20. Two plays later, senior back Dominic Joseph took the handoff 14 yards up the middle into the end zone for the Wildcats’ second score of the evening, putting the home team up 16-0.

Following a Holy Cross’ punt, Newport once again made its way deep into Indians’ territory. A few plays later, Price capitalized, zigzagging across the field, beating a host of Holy Cross defenders to the pylon, diving in to put the Wildcats up 23-0.
Bellevue Fends Off Ludlow on Homecoming, Wins 20-14
10/20/2014 - by Brian Frey
Bellevue and Ludlow each came in hot, with the Panthers visiting with a three-game winning streak and the host Tigers winning three of its previous four games.

Both teams scored within the first four minutes of the game and each would another first half touchdown. Then defense took over and neither team scored again until late in the fourth quarter when Bellevue took the lead or good after a 1-yard run into the end zone.

Ludlow had a few late-game chances but could not capitalize, including a 17-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty, a turnover, and a drive that included a 62-yard passing play that led the team to first and goal at Bellevue's 8 ended with a turnover on downs.
New Cath Runs Away From Brossart, 36-0
10/17/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Newport Central Catholic overwhelmed Bishop Brossart at home, hammering the Mustangs 36-0. The Thoroughbreds raced out to 36 points in the game's first 12 minutes.

Brossart was completely outmatched in all three phases of the game, as they were unable to tackle well at all, unable to generate hardly any offense, allowed two big kick returns and missed a short field goal. All in the first half.

The tone was set in the opening kickoff when Nate Enslen returned it 59 yards to put the Breds in excellent starting field position. Two snaps later, Jacob Smith took the ball on a sweep to the right, made a cut and waltzed into the end zone untouched. On the two-point conversion, New Cath ran the exact same play for the exact same outcome making the score 8-0. That was the beginning to a quick end for Brossart.

On the Mustangs' first possession, quarterback Clay Kramer was sacked for a 14-yard loss after scrambling and were forced to punt. On the next play, the Breds tricked the Mustangs on a double-reverse hand off that translated into a 42-yard touchdown.

After taking back over following a Kramer interception on a screen play, Jacob Smith took a hand off up the middle and ran it in for an easy 37-yard score. Soon after that, Enslen caught a quick pass in the flat, juked his man nearly out of his shoes, and ran it in 52 yards for a touchdown.
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
10/16/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast features Simon Kenton (8-0) vs. Dixie (6-1).

This Class 6A District game could quite possibly be the biggest regular season game in Northern Kentucky this year. The undefeated Pioneers look to stay unbeaten while the Colonels look for their seventh straight win. The winner of this game will have the #1 District seed just about locked up.

Simon Kenton defeated Boone County last week 27-21. The Pioneers are led by Junior RB Dillon Powell, Sophomore QB Cam Racke, and Senior WR Logan Winkler. Powell has rushed for 808 yards (5th in NKY) and 9 TD’s. Racke has thrown for 1,219 yards and 16 TD’s (both 3rd in NKY), and Winkler has 613 receiving yards (3rd in NKY) and 13 TD receptions (1st in NKY).

Dixie shutout Campbell County last week 43-0. The Colonels have a great rushing attack led by Senior QB Drew Moore and Senior RB Luke Zajac. Moore is a dual threat having rushed for 799 yards (6th) and 13 TD’s (2nd). He has also thrown for 729 yards and 3 TD’s. Zajac has rushed for 559 yards and 6 TD’s.

Since 2005 these two teams are 5-5 against each other. Simon Kenton won both games last year in the regular season and playoffs.

Brossart (1-5) at NewCath (2-4)

The Breds are 3-0 against the Mustangs and that winning streak will continue tonight.

Brossart Radio will be webcasting tonight’s game and we will have a link to on the website.

Ryle (3-5) at Campbell County (4-3)
This is another big Class 6A District game with Ryle coming off a huge win over CovCath 21-14. Ryle has won 2 straight and is steadily improving this season. Meanwhile, Campbell County has lost two straight. Last week they lost to Dixie 43-0.

Ryle is 8-3 against Campbell County but the Camels have won the past 3 games. They won last year 40-7.

Scott (5-1) at South Oldham (5-2)
This is a big Class 5A District game for Scott as they look for their 2nd District win against a team that’s beaten Cooper already. And next week they’ll play an improving District opponent, Conner, as part of next week’s OMEGA Processing Game of the Week.

Scott is 0-3 against the Dragons and lost last year 30-20.

Kentucky Football is 5-1 After Rolling ULM with
10/13/2014 - by Ashley Scoby
Patrick Towles did not crack a smile.

“I would say I expected us to be 6-0,” he said, after a reporter asked him if, at the beginning of the season, he would have expected Kentucky to be 5-1 after six games.

“For sure,” Towles continued. “No doubt.”

The Kentucky quarterback, after his sixth career start resulted in a 48-14 romp over Louisiana-Monroe, still didn’t smile. And he didn’t need to, because no part of what he said was supposed to be funny. Just the 100 percent truth from the leader of a team that suddenly is not being laughed at on a national scale.

This team did expect to be 6-0, and if Southeastern Conference officials had paid more attention to the play clock in Gainesville a few weeks ago, it would be 6-0. Instead, the Wildcats will have to settle for being 5-1 for the first time since 2007 and just the seventh time since Paul “Bear” Bryant roamed the sidelines. (Kentucky was also 5-1 in 1950, 1976, 1977, 1983 and 1984).

There were times on Saturday when fans could have easily doubted that Kentucky would win the game at all. The Wildcats got off to a horrendous start against Louisiana-Monroe, and were quickly staring at a 14-3 deficit by the end of the first quarter.

But in the midst of a sputtering offense and a porous defense, senior defensive end Bud Dupree got animated in the huddle and told the team this wasn’t who they were.
