Campbell County Leads Victory over Cooper
9/15/2014 - by Lizzie Kibler
Campbell County Camels are now 3-1 in the season after their win over the Cooper Jaguars Friday night. The Camels’ victory was led by quarterback, Carson Plessinger (#23) and running back Josh Carroll (#5).

The game opened up with the Jaguars driving down into Camel territory. Both defenses were strong, but when the Jaguars got in field goal range, the kick was no good. There was no scoring in the first quarter by either team.

The second quarter began with Plessinger driving the Camels into Jaguar territory with successful passes to Camels’ Eli Mathews (#13), but the Camels failed to score. Later in the quarter, with the Camels driving, an interception was made by Jaguars’ Tyson Jackson (#81) driving the Jaguars into Camel territory.

After a completed screen pass made by Jaguars’ Billy Prickett (#2) to Torey Cordell-Armstrong (#27), Cordell-Armstrong scored a 32 yard touchdown. The extra point was good bringing the score to 7-0 Jaguars at the half.

Jaguars kicked off in the opening of the third quarter with a return by Camels’ Eli Mathews. The Camels then took the drive into the Jaguars’ territory. Camels’ Plessinger ran to the 3 yard line setting up Josh Carroll to score a 3 yard touchdown run.

The third quarter ended with a tie 7-7.

The Camels started the final quarter with a drive into Jaguar territory which included Plessinger’s run for 41 yards. That set up for a 27 yard field goal kick bringing the score to 10-7 Camels.

Several plays later, Plessinger almost scored a 21 yard touchdown, but was called back on a holding penalty. Fortunately for the Camels, Plessinger eventually scored a 10 yard touchdown with the extra point being good.

The game ended with the Camels winning 17-7.

Campbell County Camels will be playing another home game against the Conner Cougars next Friday.
Simon Kenton Runs Away With Game at New Cath
9/13/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Friday night's game between Simon Kenton and Newport Central Catholic featured two teams spiraling in different directions. Simon Kenton came into the contest undefeated and scoring on a torrid pace. New Cath had yet to win and had been sputtering on the scoreboard. Those trends continued at Newport Stadium as the Pioneers thrashed the Thoroughbreds, 46-13.

NCC did a good deal to hurt itself with penalties and interceptions, but the most obvious difference from the sideline appeared to be team speed. Simon Kenton is very quick on the outside as their wideouts Logan Winkler and Logan Scott blazed around the edge all night on the Breds.

“They can run a little bit,” said Simon Kenton head coach Jeff Marksbury of his speedy receivers.

Winkler is especially talented with good straight-line speed, quickness in and out of his breaks and nice hands to go up and make contested grabs. He got the scoring started in the first quarter for the Pioneers as he took a wide-receiver bubble screen 46 yards to the house, racing down the sidelines and avoiding three ankle tackles in the process. A moment later, he took the ball on a direct snap and followed his lone blocker to the pylon, breaking the plane of the endzone to score the two-point conversion, putting his team up 8-0. They would not relinquish the lead all night. From there, they poured it on and the bottom fell out for Newport Central Catholic.
Turnovers, Slow Second Half Trip Up Bellevue
9/13/2014 - by Brian Frey
Bellevue welcomed Fairview on Friday and the Tigers fell to their visitors by a margin of 47-22.

Both teams were pass-heavy with a combined 93 throws.

The game started slow with Bellevue getting deep into Eagle territory twice in the first quarter but coming away empty-handed. Then, with 35 seconds to play in the first quarter, Fairview put up the first points of the game.

The teams scored five combined touchdowns in the second quarter and Bellevue took a halftime lead of 22-20.

But the Tigers (1-3) would be shut out in the second half.

The two teams gained over 800 combined offensive yards, but combined for ten turnovers, eight committed by Bellevue.
No Time to Waste: Cov Cath Must Shake Off Moeller Loss, Prepare for Henderson Co
9/11/2014 - by Bryan Burke
There is no time for sympathy in football. Covington Catholic was rocked last week by Cincinnati's Moeller, 39-0, but another formidable foe awaits the Colonels this Saturday. Henderson County comes to Park Hills with a 2-1 record and back-to-back wins.

Headlining the Henderson County offensive line is senior lineman Mason Wolfe who is over 300 pounds and has committed to play at Kentucky next season. There is plenty of beef elsewhere on the line as well. Cov Cath, however, is ready for a big team after taking on one of the biggest in Ohio last week.

“That's why we play the GCL game early in the year because we want to see that size and that speed early. That way when we line up against everyone else for the rest of the year, our eyes don't get quite as big,” said Colonel head coach Dave Wirth.

Henderson County is the fifth largest school in Kentucky with a rich football tradition. Also nicknamed the Colonels, Henderson County has finished the last five seasons with nine wins and are off to a nice start this year. Head coach Tony Lewis enters his second year with the school and has had success in both Ohio and Indiana as a coach.

“They are a well-coached, discipline team. They have a great mix of players. It's a really good game for us, post-Moeller to kind of find out where we are physically and mentally. They're a good team,” Wirth said.
Scott Football Now Firmly in Heyday
9/11/2014 - by Bryan Burke
One might safely say that the Scott Eagles are firmly in their football heyday.

Last season they logged only their second winning season in school history and this year they are off to a scorching hot start. In their two games this season, Scott has outscored their opponents 91-7. Their first game was an impressive 34-7 win over Holmes, followed by a 57-0 drubbing of Aiken (OH).

Friday, though, the Eagles host the Newport Wildcats in their home opener, and Scott head coach, Dan Woolley, knows it will be a serious challenge compared to what they've seen previously this year.

“This is a good chance to see where we are. I have a lot of respect for coach Matt Schmitz, he's done a good job kind of turning things around there and being a breath of fresh air. They're playing well and playing confident,” Woolley said of Newport.
A serious bright spot for the Eagles this season has been the team's defense, especially from strong safety, Deondre Pleasant, who has been a do-it-all player so far this year for Scott.

“Deondre Pleasant has been phenomenal for us on both sides of the ball,” said Woolley. “He's averaging like 40 yards a carry, it's ridiculous. He's already got three interceptions this year. He ran back a punt and playing strong safety he's got quite a few tackles too. He's also got two touchdowns on offense: a 92-yarder last week and a 54-yarder the week before that. I wouldn't call him a surprise because I know he is a great athlete but I am glad to see him playing to his potential.”
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
9/11/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week features Simon Kenton (3-0) vs. Newport Central Catholic (0-2).

Simon Kenton has been dominating teams the first 3 games by scoring 150 points and only allowing 27. Last week the Pioneers defeated Conner easily 53-6.

Simon Kenton is led by Senior RB Kyle Heflin, Senior WR Logan Winkler, and Sophomore QB Cam Racke. Heflin has 230 yards rushing and 5 rush TD’s, Winkler has 292 receiving yards and 5 TD receptions, and Racke has thrown for 493 yards and 7 TD’s.

NewCath is still looking for their first win but their schedule has been brutal, and next week it doesn’t get any easier when they host Dixie. NewCath lost to Campbell County last week 30-17.

The Breds are led by Senior WR Brandon Gray, Junior RB Jacob Smith and Sophomore QB Patrick Henschen. Gray has 121 receiving yards, Smith has 74 rush yards and 2 TD’s, and Henshcen has thrown for 200 yards.

Since 2005, these 2 teams are 3-3 against each other with Simon Kenton winning the past 2 years. Last year the Pioneers won 30-7.

Cooper (3-0) at Campbell County (2-1)
This should be a very good game to watch. Cooper’s defense has only allowed 9 points all year but will face a much better offense in Campbell County this week. The Jaguars defeated Boone County last week 31-6 and are led by Junior RB Torey Cordell-Armstrong and Senior QB Billy Prickett. Cordell-Armstrong leads NKY in rushing with 408 yards while Prickett has thrown for 365 yards and 5 TD’s.

Campbell County is led by Junior QB Carson Plessinger who leads NKY in rushing TD’s with 7. Plessinger has also rushed for 317 yards and thrown for 167 yards and 1 TD pass.

Overall, Campbell County is 4-2 against Cooper and won last year’s meeting 17-12.

Newport (1-1) at Scott (2-0)
Newport is much improved this year and had a big win over Walton-Verona 2 weeks ago. They are coming off a bye week to face Scott who won last week over Aiken 57-0.

Newport is led by Senior QB Paul Price who has 141 rush yards and 3 rush TD’s along with 218 pass yards and 2 pass TD’s. Scott is led by Junior RB Roberto London who has 224 rush yards and 3 rush TD’s.

Since 2007, Scott is 4-1 against Newport and won last year 50-0.

Holmes (1-2) at Walton-Verona (2-1)
Holmes is looking to bounce back after last week’s 48-12 loss to Lloyd. They’ll play a Walton-Verona team that’s coming off a 48-10 win over Kentucky Country Day. Walton-Verona won this matchup last year 27-14.

NKY Football Roundup: Highlands, Bellevue Rack Up Points
9/7/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Highlands, 47, Bryan Station 41
Highlands receiver Alex Veneman caught a 43-yard touchdown catch with under two minutes left to give the Bluebirds the lead they needed to escape with a win. Highlands produced over 500 yards in total offense in the shootout. The Bluebirds remain unbeaten this year at 2-0 and host John Hardin next Friday night.

Dixie 48, Beechwood 21
Dixie trampled Beechwood by rushing for seven touchdowns in the win, including four by quarterback Drew Moore. The Colonels righted their season after getting thumped at Covington Catholic a week ago, and showed they are not to be taken lightly in their district. Dixie (1-1) plays Cincinnati's Turpin next week, while Beechwood (0-2) visits Holy Cross at Holmes High School.

Campbell County 30, Newport Central Catholic 17
The Campbell County defensive line sacked NCC quarterback Pat Henschen eight times including on a safety that gave the Camels a lead they would not relinquish. The game was played at Newport Stadium and was part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown series. The Camel front four was so dominant against New Cath, the Thoroughbreds ended the game with -1 yard rushing on 33 attempts. Campbell County quarterback Carson Plessinger ran for three scores and now has seven rushing touchdowns on the season. Campbell County (2-1) hosts Cooper next week, and Newport Central Catholic (0-2) tries to get on track against Simon Kenton.
Holmes Tripped Up on Homecoming, Bulldogs Fall to Lloyd, 42-18
9/7/2014 - by Brian Frey
Holmes looked to bounce back after last week's 34-7 loss at home to Scott, but Lloyd, fresh off a 52-o rout of Dayton, had other plans.

The Juggernauts took the opening and drive in for a score, making it look like another lopsided ending would be in store. However, the Bulldogs blocked the extra point and then returned a Lloyd kickoff to the Juggernauts' 26-yard line. A 15-yard penalty against Lloyd put the Bulldogs in a threatening position.

But Holmes failed to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs. It was 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Lloyd answered with a 71-yard touchdown run with a two point conversion, making their lead 14-0. With under three minutes left in the half, Holmes again turned the ball over on downs and the Juggernauts ran the ball 58 yards for another touchdown and a 21-0 zero lead.

The last ninety seconds of the half were busy.
Moeller Breezes Past Cov Cath, 39-0
9/7/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Covington Catholic had been riding high on the wave of momentum after breezing past Boone County and Dixie Heights in consecutive wins, but that wave crashed hard upon the shores of reality as they were manhandled by a burlier Moeller team, 39-0, at Lockland Memorial Stadium in Cincinnati.

Moeller jumped out to a quick 15-0 first-quarter lead after turning two turnovers into touchdowns. The Colonels showed life in the second quarter when quarterback Adam Wagner hit Lee McClure streaking down the sidelines on a go route. McClure had a step on his man to the end zone, but fumbled the ball out of bounds near the 20-yard line. A few plays later, the Colonels turned the ball over on downs.

“There were a couple of plays that snowballed on us,” said Covington Catholic head coach, Dave Wirth. “We moved the ball well in the first half. We were down a guy or two in the second half and that certainly didn't help. We took a couple of calculated chances because we knew we had to create a possession or two during this game because of their size.”

The size difference on paper was noticeable, but was indeed stark in person. A few Moeller players have NFL frames already and finding running room inside the hashmarks proved impossible for the Colonels against such girth. They tried some designed runs for Wagner, but each time he was only able to gain minimal yards and took a licking from the savage Moeller tacklers. Cov Cath generated only 49 yards on 26 carries. By the end, Wagner looked spent.
Sports Briefs: Scott Football Wins Big, New Cath Golf Star Shines
9/5/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Scott football crushed Cincinnati's Aiken, 57-0, for their second road win in a row. Scott is undefeated at 2-0 so far this season, and play Newport in their home-opener, September 12.

Notre Dame Academy volleyball lost on the road to Louisville Mercy Academy on Thursday nigh, 25-12, 25-20 and 25-16. NDA is 3-2 on the season.
Ludlow defeated Lloyd 25-12, 25-20 and 25-22. The Lady Panthers are 8-2 so far this year.

Newport Central Catholic golfer, Drew McDonald, shot a one-under-par 34 at AJ Jolly to lead NCC to the win over Bishop Brossart 154-168. McDonald is also a standout basketball player and has committed to play both golf and hoops at Northern Kentucky University next season.
Expectations are High Again for Notre Dame's Nationally-Ranked Volleyball Squad
9/5/2014 - by Bryan Burke
The Notre Dame Academy volleyball team has a big reputation to upkeep. Last year, the Pandas were Kentucky state runner-ups and have won the championship eight times in their school history, and this year the hopes are high again.

“Winning state has to be our expectation every year, especially at a school like Notre Dame Academy and especially coming off a state runner-up year. It's the finals or bust for us,” said Pandas first-year coach, Buck McCoart.

NDA is off to a good start at 3-1, and are ranked 32nd in the nation, according to, but McCoart says that despite having a lot of seniors on the team, NDA still has room for growth.

“They're not necessarily young, but young in the fact that there's not much varsity experience there, but we do have some key starters that are back from last year.”

Headlining those key starters is junior Morgan Hentz, recognized nationally as a player-of-the-year candidate and vital to her team as she plays all six rotations. Hentz has been courted by major Division-I colleges and is considering college powerhouse, Stanford, along with other schools to attend after next year.
NKU Basketball Schedule Includes Trip to Wisconsin, Visit from West Virginia
9/5/2014 - by Bryan Burke
The Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team released their non-conference schedule today and announced that they will host West Virginia University on December 7 at the Bank of Kentucky Center at 7pm.

Mountaineers head coach, Bob Huggins, returns to the area where he once coached at the University of Cincinnati. Huggins has also been in Northern Kentucky recently on his trips to recruit Holmes basketball star, James “Beetle” Bolden, who has committed to play for West Virginia beginning next season in 2015. NKU defeated West Virginia in the schools' last meeting in 2011, when the Norse won in an exhibition game, 77-74.

"We have put together one tough non-conference schedule," said NKU head coach, Bezold. "Not only are we playing Wisconsin and Nebraska to open the season, but we welcome Coach (Bob) Huggins and West Virginia to the Bank of Kentucky Center in December. While the team tries to treat every game the same, having a team like West Virginia come to your home venue is certainly exciting for the fans and proves that NKU is already viewed well as a DI Program."
Cov Cath Football to Clash with Cincinnati Moeller
9/4/2014 - by Bryan Burke
When Covington Catholic crosses the bridge on Friday to take on Cincinnati's Moeller, it will be the eleventh time the two schools have met. Moeller has won nine straight in the series. Cov Cath head coach Dave Wirth remembers the first meeting in 1992 when he was a student at Moeller.

“I played in the very first Moeller/Cov Cath game back in 1992, so I am familiar with the series and results and that stuff really doesn't bother us much,” he said.

Wirth has plenty of respect for the Moeller program, but he runs his own ship his own way.

“The four years I played there and the six years that I spent coaching at Moeller were very formative for me. A lot of who I am and what I do are attributed to those years and those experiences, but we don't try and emulate them other than the good things that they do. We try and take what's good from all of our opponents and emulate it, to be honest with you.”

If anything, other teams should be emulating him. His team this year is off to a roaring start, scoring 80 points and allowing just 13 in only six quarters of play thus far in 2014. Starting quarterback Adam Wagner has roasted opposing defenses through the air with nearly 400 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Wide receivers Lee McClure and Logan McDowell have been the beneficiaries of Wagner's impressive stats, each racking up over 100 yards receiving and multiple touchdown passes.
OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
9/4/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week features Campbell County (1-1) vs. Newport Central Catholic (0-1). This game is also part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

The Camels played a great second half last week against Highlands before falling 23-16 at home. They trailed Highlands 23-0 at the half but answered with 16 points in the 4th quarter but time ran out. Campbell County is led by Sophomore QB Carson Plessinger who has rushed for 281 yards and 4 TDs, and also thrown for 167 yards and 1 TD.

NewCath lost their opener last week to Cooper 31-0. The Thoroughbred offense could never get on track against the tough Jaguar defense. NewCath will need to get Sophomore Jacob Smith on track for this weekend’s game, he only had 29 rush yards last week. Smith accounted for over 1,300 yards of offense and 16 TDs last season for the Breds.

Since 2005, NewCath is 4-3 against Campbell County but have lost the last 2 games. Last year was a close one with the Camels edging the Breds 21-20.

Lloyd (1-0) at Holmes (1-1)
Lloyd won big over Dayton last week 52-0 but will have a lot more competition this week against the Holmes Bulldogs. Holmes defeated Holy Cross 21-7 in game 1 but had their hands full against Scott losing 34-7. This should be a good game to watch. Holmes has won the last 3 games but only defeated the Juggernauts 34-28 last year.

Lloyd is led by RB Justin Durham and QB Hayden Molitor. Durham had 79 rush yards and 2 TDs while Molitor threw for 123 yards and 2 TDs. Holmes is led by RB Delijiah Ross-Tyus and QB DeSean Brumfield. Ross-Tyus leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 173 yards and 3 TDs while Brumfield has thrown for 303 yards.

Beechwood (0-1) at Dixie (0-1)
Beechwood and Dixie are both coming off opening season losses. Beechwood fell to Mount Healthy 40-34 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown while Dixie lost to CovCath 41-7. Since 2005, Dixie is 3-5 against the Tigers but won last year 41-20.

Boone County (1-1) at Cooper (2-0)
Boone County scored 49 points in their win over Conner last week (49-26) and it will be interesting to see how they fare against Cooper’s defense who’s only allowed 3 points in their first 2 games. The Jaguars have only allowed 3 points total against Ryle and NewCath.

Boone County’s offensive weapons include RB Jerry Marshall and QB Jamar Lamb. Marshall has rushed for 238 yards and 4 TDs while Lamb has thrown for 349 yards and 2 TDs.

Cooper has had strong performances from their RB/QB due as well. RB Torey Cordell-Armstrong has rushed for 242 yards and 1 TD while QB Billy Prickett has thrown for 252 yards and 3 TDs.

Stoops Says Wildcats are Ready to Show Fans They Have What it Takes
8/30/2014 - by Glenn Osborne
It’s been just over a week since Kentucky head football coach Mark Stoops answered the question he’s been asked most frequently since the 2013 season ended.

Who’s your starting quarterback?

Yet when Stoops met with the media Monday in advance of the Wildcats’ season-opener against Tennessee Martin Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium, it was a bit surprising when he said he also hoped his second string quarterback got on the field for at least a series or two.

Sophomore Patrick Towles, the former Mr. Football from Ft. Thomas Highlands, is the No. 1 signal-caller and he’ll see the bulk of the action. But backup Reese Phillips could also get a few snaps, Stoops said.

“That’s the plan right now,” Stoops said. “We’ll get into that honestly as we get through this week. I think I’d love to play him. But you know and I know Patrick needs the reps. We’ve got to get out there, get better, move this program forward. We’ll see how that goes. But to answer your question, I’d be very disappointed if he didn’t play in this game.”

But no matter what happens behind center on Saturday, don’t look for Stoops and offensive coordinator Neal Brown to have a quick hook should Towles struggle a bit.
Newport Pulls Away from Walton-Verona, Wins 36-26
8/30/2014 - by Brian Frey
Newport bolted out to an early lead on the visiting Walton-Verona when Brian Burton returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After a two-point conversion, the Wildcats led 8-0.

The Bearcats answered with an interception returned to the Newport 4-yard line and put up a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Newport would put up another touchdown before the first quarter ended, leading 14-6.

Midway through the second quarter, Walton-Verona added another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14. That would be the score at halftime after the Bearcats missed a last second field goal attempt.

With 7:13 left in the third quarter, Walton took its first lead on a touchdown drive aided by a Newport penalty when the Bearcats were facing third and long. Walton was given a first down and then scored.

That lead was short-lived as Newport, facing fourth and four, went for it and scored a 30-yard-plus rushing touchdown by Paul Price. Adding another two-point conversion, Newport led 22-20 with five minutes left in the third.
Scott Wallops Holmes 34-7
8/30/2014 - by Bryan Burke
Scott scored a nice road win on Friday as they thumped Holmes, 34-7. The Eagles dominated on the ground in their season opener as the trio of Scott running backs thrashed the Bulldogs on multiple big runs.

“I think our kids got tired of hitting each other in practice. We just wanted to face some competition,” said Scott head coach Dan Woolley.

Scott running back Roberto London got the party started early for the Eagles as he scored in the first quarter on a long touchdown run that gave his team a lead they would not lose. Deondre Pleasant also had a spectacular game as he scored touchdowns on a big run and on a punt return and also intercepted a pass in the Holmes end zone.

The Bulldogs struggled to find the big play like the ones that led them to victory a week ago. Tailback Delijiah Ross-Tyus scored the only touchdown for Holmes but was largely kept in check by a fast Scott defense.

“Our defense is playing outstanding. They gave up some drives, but for the most part they played really well. That's what I am really excited about. I knew we'd have some good running backs but the way our defense as a unit is playing is what I am happiest about,” said Woolley.

Scott frustrated Holmes into a multitude of costly mistakes. In addition to the red zone interception, they continued to hurt themselves with what head coach Ben Nevels has called self-inflicted wounds. Pre-snap penalties, dropped passes and a bad snap on a punt were all examples of what went wrong for the Bulldogs. Throw in an injury to Holmes quarterback Desean Brumfield in the first half when they game was still relatively in reach and you had the perfect recipe for disaster. Brumfield returned in the second half.
