Newport, St. Henry Advance in All A Classic
Bryan Burke - The River City News
St. Henry advanced in the quarterfinal round of the All-A Classic tournament over host Holy Cross, 63-56, on Wednesday night.

The Crusaders led in every quarter and were tested late in a spirited comeback attempt from the Indians, but held down the victory thanks largely in part to good free-throw shooting to close out the game.

Holy Cross is a team made up of mainly spot-up shooters that are not very tall and when they shoot the likes of 37 percent from the field and 5-21 from three-point land, it's likely to be a long night for the Indians. They played tough, tenacious defense against the Crusaders, collecting 12 steals in the process, and did not quit on the game despite trailing the majority of the time, but their shooting shortcomings plagued them.

For St. Henry, they pulled out a gritty win and are now 11-7 on the year, but it was a not a clean game for them by any stretch. Their 14 turnovers were not completely outrageous, but they had consistent problems passing the ball all night. Collectively, they at times played unselfishly to a fault and made an extra pass when none was needed. No player emerged as a regular scoring threat once St. Henry forward Paul Wallenhorst was neutralized in the second half to the tune of three points after scoring nine in the first. The Indians harassed the parameter and made St. Henry work for their open looks down low.

Wallenhorst is a disciplined player that moves well without the ball and doesn't appear to take many chances. He's big enough to pull out tough rebounds, but small enough to handle some guards and smaller forwards outside. He led the team with his 12 points.
