Simon Kenton 28 NewCath 20
9/16/2012 - by Eli Hendricks
It was a tale of two halves. The first was owned by Newport Central Catholic who started the game by scoring fourteen unanswered points. The first was a 13 yard strike from senior quarterback Josh Cain to fellow senior, standout wide receiver Pete Collopy to go up 7-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter Cain continued his touchdown throwing ways, putting his team up by 14. Simon Kenton would respond in the quarter with 18 unanswered points, the first by quarterback Brenan Kuntz who threw a 38 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Sampson to narrow NCC’s lead to 14-6. Followed shortly on an 8 yard run by Sampson with 5:16 left in the 2nd quarter to narrow the lead away to 2 with NCC’s 14-12 lead being threatened and then eventually completely gone, when with less than a minute left in the first half, Kuntz threw his second touchdown pass of the night to go up 18-14 on NCC.

The only drawback for Simon Kenton in the second quarter was that every time Simon Kenton scored a touchdown they would go for two and they failed on all three two-point conversions thereby leaving three points on the field so instead of being up 21-14 they walked into the half with a four point lead.

The second half began the same way the first ended with Swanson getting the ball at Simon Kenton’s six and taking it all the way out to their 49 which began Simon Kenton’s field goal drive so that they could make their lead 21-14 and they never relinquished that lead.

But NCC did make it close by scoring their only rushing touchdown with a tough effort up the middle with Hayes, but on the point after attempt NCC’s kicker double clutched the kick and didn’t even get the ball off.

In the 4th quarter, Kuntz ices the game with an incredible clutch TD pass in which he escaped a few defenders to escape sacks and rolling out to his right to throw a touchdown strike to a streaking wide receiver that had broken loose down the side line to set up what ended up being the final score of the game, 28-20 Simon Kenton.

The secondary stories in the game were NCC’s penalty problems totalling 13 penalties for 118 yards. They showed a severe lack of discipline on defense and never could figure out Simon Kenton’s hard count. Kuntz had them off sides all night gaining 5 yards on 3rd and 4th down consistently.

Also, on the Simon Kenton side Kuntz led the team with 3 TD passes and Player of the Game honors. He looked like an incredibly elusive and talented athlete who plays quarterback at a relatively high level for a high school quarterback. He showed great discipline and poise by managing to consistently escape the pressure from the aggressive NCC defensive line, rolling out to his right, and keeping his eyes down field.
