All A Baseball Roundup and Postseason Preview
5/17/2011 - by Marlon Bray
Two Northern Kentucky teams represented the area well in the 2011 All A Baseball Tournament. Newport Central Catholic, winners of the 9th region, played in the bottom half of the bracket while 10th region winner, Brossart, was seeded in the top half.

NCC defeated 11th region champs Sayre in the first round 8-6. The Thoroughbreds then went on to face Reidland, who they handled 4-3. In the semi-finals the Breds had their hands full against Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL). Earlier in the day CAL defeated Hazard 20-0. NCC could not cool off the hot bats of Christian Academy falling 10-6.

Bishop Brossart came into the tournament on fire, as they were winner in 10 of 12 games. The Mustangs blew away Prestonbug in the second round 9-1 and Glasgow in the semi-finals 7-1. Despite the impressive wins the 'Stangs knew they would have their hand full facing Christian Academy of Louisville in the championship game. The previously smoking hot offense of Brossart was not prepared for CAL pitcher Mitch Wiley.

Through 5 innings Wiley limited the Mustangs to no runs and just two infield hits. Meanwhile Christian Academy was able to get 3 runs in the third inning and 2 more in the 6th. Despite the impressive pitching performance the 'Stangs would not easily give up. Brossart began to mount a comeback in the 6th inning where they scored their first run of the game. In the bottom of the 7th Brossart put one more run up on the bored, sadly it would be their last. With 2 base runners on and two outs Junior Jared Hahn, who represented the tying run, grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Both Newport Central Catholic as well as Bishop Brossart represented the area well by making it to the semi-finals. Josh Cain of NCC was named to the all tournament team. Mustangs Zach Fardo, Dylan Embs, Ian Hehman, and Travis Norton were also named to the all tournament team.

Postseason Preview
This week marks the final of the 2011 high school baseball season. As we take a look ahead at the post season the 9th region looks to be a toss up among 5 teams. Ryle (19-8), CovCath (22-9), Holy Cross (21-6), Beechwood (25-6), and NCC (19-8) all look to be contenders for the region championship. In the 10th region two local teams hope to continue their winning ways in the post season. Bishop Brossart (22-9) looks to run the table on their region where they are currently 9-0. Surging Campbell County (16-10) hopes for the same as they have won 6 of their last 8.
