Birds Slay Dragons 21-20
10/25/2005 - by Nathan Eten
It was a cold and rainy night Friday when the Highlands Bluebirds (6-3) took to the turf at Cecil Memorial Stadium against the resiliant Dragons from South Oldham.

This one started looking like it was going to be all 'Birds as on the kickoff, Jordan Bridgett would take it to the house giving Highlands an early 6-0 lead. They tacked on the XP and it was 7-0. South Oldham had a hard time scoring in the first quarter. The 'Birds defense seemed too much to handle. South Oldham was led by their two RB's, Seth and Mathias Gordon. The Gordon boys would fair well in this game, but Highlands would tack on another running TD that was capped off by the speedster, Jordan Kramer. Highlands would take a commanding 14-0 lead going into halftime, despite the efforts of South Oldham late in the 2nd quarter.

After halftime the coaches from S. Oldham must have put a little fire back in the breath of their Dragons offense. Seth and Mathias Gordon led the charge as they both ran their way toward the endzone. South Oldham would get into the end zone twice before the 'Birds were able to answer. In what looked to be like a 'Birds blowout quickly became a game for the ages.

The game was tied 14-14 and as quick as you could say "Touchdown" Highlands was in the end zone again. This time it was a Chase Cecil - to - Ben Guigduli pass that set up the 'Birds score. Highlands took the lead 21-14. The atmosphere was tense and South Oldham would not fold under pressure. There was still plenty of time for a South Oldham drive and they would deliver. It was a short pass into the flats that resulted in a 50+ yard TD for South Oldham, but the game was about to take an abrupt turn for the Dragons. On the ensuing XP, the 'Birds defensive unit would block the XP keeping the Bluebirds ahead 21-20.

The Dragons would not give up, however, and took the ball one last time to try to get into field goal range with under a minute left to play. The next four downs were crucial. The Dragons QB was able to get a first down, but the next four downs resulted in nothing. It was a great effort put up by South Oldham, but this story would not have a good ending for them. The result from Ft. Thomas was 21-20 and a "shot from the cannon" (victory) for Highlands. Next week they will take on their rival, the CovCath Colonels (6-3).
