OMEGA/ProScan Game of the Week - Cooper at Highlands
8/15/2016 - by NKS Editor
Welcome back to NKYSports.com as we begin our 11th year covering Northern Kentucky Sports! The High School football season begins this weekend and we’re happy to have OMEGA and ProScan as our Co-Title sponsors for the website. OMEGA Processing has been a Title sponsor for NKYSports.com the past 3 seasons (since 2013) and we now welcome ProScan Imaging to the team!

To start out the 2016 High School football season the OMEGA / ProScan Game of the Week webcast features a dandy, Cooper at Highlands.

Both teams are ranked in our top 5 and this will be a great game to watch! This will be only the second game ever between the Jaguars and Bluebirds, last year at Cooper, the Jaguars took care of business with a 37-13 win over Highlands.

Highlands had somewhat of a down season last year finishing 8-6 and lost to Pulaski County 41-31 in the Class 5A Semifinals. Cooper finished last year 10-3 but lost to Simon Kenton 13-12 in the Class 6A Quarterfinals.

Cooper will be led by Senior WR Dante Hendrix. Hendrix led NKY with 1,160 receiving yards and 15 TD's. But Cooper will have a new first-year starter at QB so the challenge is getting the ball to him. Highlands will most likely rely on their Senior RB's Grant Murray and Jared Pulsfort who combined for over 900 yards and 9 TD's last year.

CovCath at Ryle
Senior QB Morgan Tanner returns for Ryle after leading NKY last season with 2,674 yards and 21 TD's. The Ryle defense should be really good this year as well with some returning starters at the LB position. CovCath will look to Junior QB AJ Mayer as he returns for his second year at the helm. Last year Mayer rushed for 631 yards and 7 TD's and threw for 1,974 yards and 17 TD's.

CovCath is 1-4 all time against Ryle and lost a close one last year 35-28. We expect another close game this year but Ryle's home field advantage might give them the edge.

Walton-Verona at Lloyd
This game starts the Skyline Crosstown Showdown series in Northern Kentucky. These two teams have been very competitive against each other with Lloyd winning the series 4-3 thus far. Lloyd defeated Walton-Verona 2 times last year to start the season and in the playoffs.

NewCath at Scott (Saturday)
NewCath lost a very good running back in Jacob Smith but return some key starters in Senior QB Patrick Henschen and Senior WR/LB Trent Wrobleski. The Breds should have another good shot at going to State again this season in Class 2A. Last year they lost to Mayfield in the Class 2A Finals 17-7.

Scott is coming off a very tough last second lost to Johnson Central 27-26 in the Class 4A Quarterfinals last season. The Eagles lose 14 Seniors this year and will count on Junior QB Nelson Perrin and Junior RB Alex Thurza to lead the offense.

These two teams faced each other in the first game of the season last year and the Eagles won 8-7. Expect more offense this time around.
